I bought 37 sewing machines
I'm Tarinii Martinsen, the designer behind Tarinii. I studied at Istituto Europeo di Design in Milan and took part in Oslo Runway Next for two seasons.
At one point I bought 37 industrial sewing machines from a closed down factory on the west coast of Norway. A bit nuts, in hindsight. It turned out I'm far more interested in making clothes than in being a sewing machine technician, so three machines are left.
Before launching in 2023, I made a few small collections that mostly stayed in the studio, though some gems from that archive still come out for the right occasion. Learning to construct clothes that fit well and last took a lot of work. Sewing and pattern making are highly technical skills, and I've put years into both.
The foundation of what I do is menswear, and even the pieces cut for women's bodies feel more connected to it than to traditional womenswear.
How a piece is made
Tarinii's process combines playful pattern making and meticulous construction, making beautiful pieces with surprising shapes and a fresh eye on menswear.
Fab clothes made in small runs. Mix of made to order and ready to ship pieces. Collections exist side by side creating an evolving archive, without hierarchy.
Fabrics move between collections, remnants from one piece find their way into another, creating an ever-evolving archive of textiles that go beyond a single collection. With the use of surplus materials, we extend the life of what already exists, to reimagine and repurpose rather than discard.
The studio makes a mix of small production runs and made to order pieces, bridging the gap between maker and wearer. Some pieces are ready to ship, others are made once someone asks for them. A few pieces, like the UFO Jacket, are made in very small runs in a trusted factory in Portugal. The jewellery is beaded by hand, with semi-precious gemstones and silver finishing.
